Canadian ambassador says public needs more info on new border-crossing ...

We know we've got to do things on the security side, but if we try to hermetically seal a country or a continent from the rest of the world, it's going to impose a significant economic cost,'' Wilson said. ``Sometimes we get it right; sometimes we get it wrong.''

For more information on new travel requirements, visit www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/crossingborders/whtibasics.shtm.

How to salvage Benton landfill?

Every so often, Redding City Manager Kurt Starman pulls together local business owners for a breakfast meeting to take the "pulse" of the local business climate. I was invited to the most recent meeting. Looking around the table, I first noticed that half the attendees were city of Redding employees, some recently hired from the private market. That kind of tells you the pulse right there.

Kurt threw down the gauntlet at me. He said, "Keith, you're a deep thinker. See if you can come up with something, anything, that the city could do with the old Benton landfill site."

Road-safety ELFS may put lumps of coal in your wallets

Other deputies will be keeping an eye out for drunken drivers.

Here's one last try at turning Grinch into an acronym: Get Real Involved in Non-Crash Holidays.

If you can do better -- and I hope you can -- send suggestions.

Now for this week's questions.

Dear Road Wise: Seems to me the traffic department could do a much better job synchronizing the lights on Edgewater Drive. No matter the time of day, there is a mix of red and green lights on Edgewater and many delays.

JAMES D. BROWER
ORLANDO
Dear James: You've pointed out an ongoing source of problems to those who try to keep the traffic flowing.

Earlier this year, traffic officials used a consultant's study to retime lights on Edgewater.

US elections 2004

For supporters of John Kerry, who have seen allegations about the Democratic candidate's military record sap his campaign, it must have seemed like a case of just deserts.

The president, George Bush, was last week looking vulnerable on the same grounds after CBS's flagship current affairs show, 60 Minutes, broadcast a report claiming he had been suspended from pilot duties for failing to meet the required standards. It was also claimed that a commanding officer had been put under pressure to "sugar coat" Mr Bush's performance reviews.

But while CBS stands by its story, allegations have now surfaced that 60 Minutes based a large part of the report on forged documents.

Although what one man - even a presidential candidate - did more than 30 years ago can seem rather trivial, the US election is being fought between a self-declared "war president" and a man who, in stump speeches, claims he would defend his country as president in the way he had defended it as a young man.

Investing in state's arts scene is smart move

Oregonians don't need deep pockets and highbrow tastes to be supporters of the arts and culture.

They give to high school kids' music programs each fall when students knock at their door. They write checks to the local libraries that help them through dark winter months. They buy memberships to art museums, science museums and community theaters.

Since 2002, the state has made it possible to give extra support to these and many other programs through the Oregon Cultural Trust. So far, the folks taking advantage of this state tax break tend to be big donors to the arts. But regular folks can be part of the action, too -- and they should.

All they need to do is add up those $5 and $10 and $20 checks to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations for 2007; write a matching check for the total to the Oregon Cultural Trust by year's end; and take a tax credit -- better than a deduction -- off their 2007 Oregon taxes.

The filthy rich: Forbes lists America’s top 400 for 2007

Microsoft’s Bill Gates tops the list once again with an estimated $59 billion to his name. Second on the list, with $52 billion, is Warren Buffett, the founder of the Berkshire Hathaway investment firm. It was Buffett who recently caused a stir by pointing out—much to the dismay of his fellow billionaires—that he and his fellow elite on the 400 list “pay a lower part of our income in taxes than our receptionists do, or our cleaning ladies for that matter.”

Others in the Forbes top 10 include Las Vegas resort and casino tycoons Sheldon Adelson and Kirk Kerkorian, with $28 billion and $18 billion, respectively, and Sergey Brin and Larry Page of Google, with $18.5 billion each. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison—fresh from an insider trading scandal—has $26 billion, and Michael Dell, the CEO of Dell Computer, who serves on President Bush’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, has amassed $17.2 billion.
