Are toy recalls affecting the holidays?

A list of recalls is available online at Internet web site wwww.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html. The list includes Curious George plush toys that may have been exposed to lead; Dollar General toy cars with lead paint dangers; numerous Fisher Price toys with both lead paint and choking hazards; JC Penny Winnie the Pooh play sets; Mattel's Barbie and Polly Pocket toys and wooden toys from many suppliers. Several magnetic toys were recalled due to choking hazards. Wal-Mart pulled Easy Bake Ovens due to a child's finger being nearly amputated. Kmart pulled Pool Pump water guns , wooden toys vehicles and some baby rattles from its shelves. But the toys on the recall list shouldn't be missed this holiday, said Kim Freely, Kmart corporate spokesperson. "The toy recalls are a small percentage of toys on the market," she said.

Loving Layla by Eric Clapton

Among them were Jane, Julian and Victoria Ormsby-Gore, the older children of David Harlech, who had been British ambassador to Washington during the Kennedy era. Alice was their little sister.

She had an enigmatic smile and an infectious giggle. I thought she was astonishing, but though I was very taken with her it never occurred to me then that anything could come from it. The age gap seemed enormous – I was 24 – and she seemed very fragile and slightly other-worldly.

David Mlinaric, the interior designer who had been working on Hurtwood for me, brought her down to the house. She asked me to go to a party in London with her, which kind of surprised me. I went and she ignored me all evening.

For some reason, in spite of myself, for we didn’t seem remotely compatible, I found her compelling.

Santa loves pets, too

Far from the madding shopping mall crowds, where long lines of children await Santa Claus's lap and ear, other creatures are stirring around a Santa in a far corner of the Lowe's store in Highland Heights.

And in some instances, they're also sniffing, licking and barking.

On this early December Saturday, Santa - also known as 60-year-old Larry Varney of Cold Spring - is posing for photos with pets in a relatively new holiday tradition that's becoming increasingly popular among single people, couples and families alike.

"People that have pets, they think of them like their children," says Varney's wife, Karen Ware, who attempts to draw pets' eyes to the camera with a squeaky pink ball, a string of bells and a plastic Coke bottle filled with rocks. "This is a way of getting them involved in Christmas."

Varney, Ware and photographer Dave Glos are volunteers for Northern Kentucky-based Rescue Our Shelter Animals and Strays, a non-profit organization that has been selling pet photos with Santa for the past five years.
