Salmond: Scotland independent in 10 years
Despite "tighter financial times", he said the new administration would still provide "record levels of investment in public services and fairer, lower taxes for Scottish families and business". The economic strategy document states that, by 2017, the Scottish Government wants to close the employment gap with the top five OECD economies and to match European population growth - equating to about 150,000 more people. The strategy sets a target of increasing overall income by 2017 and increasing the share of income going to the lowest 30 per cent of earners. The gap between Scotland's best and worst-performing regions should narrow by 2017, and emissions should fall by 80 per cent by 2050. Iain McMillan, CBI Scotland's director, said: "There is much in the new economic strategy we support, particularly the ambitious growth objectives and commitment to put the needs of the economy at the heart of everything the devolved government does." But he said business was opposed to plans to devolve employment, competition and immigration policy, saying: "These are best left at UK level, providing firms with a level playing field and single market across the UK." Grahame Smith, the TUC general secretary, said it was "helpful to have a single strategy setting direction for the Scottish Government, local government, the enterprise networks and other agencies".
Universal to expand its online reach
Imeem is the fourth most popular multimedia entertainment site in the United States after YouTube, Google Video and MySpace Videos, according to the tracking firm Hitwise. The site, based in Palo Alto, California, can carry full-length music and videos by Universal Music's acts, which include Snow Patrol, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse. Imeem was created in 2004, offering instant messaging and file-sharing software. It has since transformed itself into a social networking Web site that also streams free audio and video files next to advertisements by companies like Apple, Microsoft, Nike and AT&T. Apple allows iTunes users to listen only to samples of songs before they purchase them for download. But imeem allows full playback of songs and videos; it hosts links to iTunes for visitors interested in buying tracks.
Ten must-visit European hotels
Trying to pick the top 10 among luxury hotels in Europe is like trying to pick just one from a box of Fauchon chocolates. You know anything you choose will be delicious so it's going to come down to very personal preference. Some people prefer nuts over jellies, the way some people prefer decadent thread counts over bathtub size. In Pictures: Ten must-visit European hotels "There are 10 great choices in Paris alone," says Misty Ewing, spokeswoman for luxury travel network Virtuoso. Still, if she had to pick just one in Paris, it would have to be the Four Seasons Georges V. What sets it apart from the ultra-posh pack? .
SYRIA AND SYRIAN-CONTROLLED LEBANON
The government in 1991 succeeded in concluding two pacts with the Lebanese government of President Elias el-Hrawi that, in effect, recognize Syria's hegemony over Lebanon. Ostensibly limited to security and foreign-policy issues, the accords in practice give Syria the opportunity to restrict a range of human rights. The state of emergency declared in Syria in March 1963 when the Baath Party first seized power and extended regularly thereafter gives Syrian security agencies free rein to arrest and detain suspected political opponents. Using a complicated web of martial-law regulations enacted under state-of-emergency powers, Syrian security forces have detained without trial thousands of prisoners, many of whom have been held in prolonged incommunicado detention.
A Beautiful Beginning: Look like a Knock Out by the New Year
Surprisingly, some gyms and fitness centers offer just that. "Women get the same physical benefits from using the machines at Curves for 30 minutes as they would by taking an aerobics class for an hour and a half," says Terri Alldredge, Curves trainer and owner of Curves in Benton. The Curves workout consists of warm up, aerobic, strength training, cool down, and stretching periods. According to Alldredge, working out three times a week at Curves, as recommended, can show great results in a short time. "Within 30 days members usually notice they're losing inches because their clothes will feel looser," she notes. "It's also recommended that members who work out more than three days a week should slow down their pace on the alternate days to give muscles time to recuperate."Alldredge adds that getting in plenty of stretching even on non-work out days can increase flexibility by 19 percent.Help for the hurting.
Unchristian behaviour
I am not saying Mormon's are bad people or wrong. I feel if they are good people and have good intentions for all people then they only have to be judged by the Creator, not me. But it is wrong to say it is the same as the Christian religion when it certainly is not and any Christian religious leader has an obligation to bring that to light. .
Oscar Race Looks Wide Open This Year
Hollywood typically offers stronger roles for men than women, but there were so many powerful, memorable ones this year that performances that might have seemed like obvious leads are spilling over into the supporting-actor category. That's certainly true with "No Country," in which Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones share nearly equal screen time and are all essential to the story's progression. Miramax, which released the film, is pushing Brolin for best actor — his character is the one who finds the suitcase of cash left after a botched drug deal. Bardem, as the eccentric killer seeking the money, is the catalyst for much of the action, while Jones, as the Texas sheriff chasing both men, serves as the movie's moral center and is the inspiration for the title. "I agree it's very difficult to separate them and decide who's in best actor, who's in best supporting actor, but we get guided by the academy on that and that's the way they vote," said Miramax President Daniel Battsek.
