School district sets Christmas program

The students of the Cleveland School District will once again fill Walter Sillers Coliseum at Delta State University for the fourth annual Sights and Sounds of Christmas program. The event will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and is free to the public.
"We will be featuring student art work and musical performances," said Interim Supt. Dr. Jackie Thigpen. "All schools in the district will be represented, so this is a good view of the district as a whole."
Thigpen said that fine arts instructors from each school gathered to plan the event and "hit the ground running."
Thigpen noted that the Cleveland High School Brass Quintet will perform, as well as the East Side High School Choir.
"Bell Elementary Chorus will sing Lipson's Boogie and the Nailor Elementary School Singers will also perform," she said.

SHARP THINGS GET TO POINT

Cruel Thing" nails the sheen and snap of Thom Bell's symphonic Philly Soul. "An Ocean, Part Deux" and "The Devil in You Sings" throb with the perverse catchiness of Bowie at his glam peak.

Fans of baroque songsters like Rufus Wainwright or Sufjan Stevens will savor the stronger kick of the Sharp Things, as will anyone mourning the lush pleasures of albums like Elton John's "Madman Across the Water."

"I hear all this stuff in my head and if it has no outlet, it begins to ache," Serpa says. "No amount of aspirin will take care of the pain. Only sweet music."

Gear up for an exciting week ahead

Given the imminent Fed rate cut, just continue to swim with the tide — keep a stop loss at a close below the primary support level of the 20-day moving average (DMA), which, calculated on the basis of Friday's close, is at 5775. On the other hand, traders wanting to make fresh entries should try and resist that temptation.

It is best that they avoid making an entry until 6000 on the Nifty. It is only above this level that the market is likely to see fresh strength. That these are crucial levels can be seen by the fact that the 6000 calls and the 5700 puts have seen the maximum amount of open interest build-up. This seems to suggest that Nifty will consolidate within this range for some more time and only a break-out from this range will bring in more strength.

However, that does not mean that all is lost for the bears.

On the streets of binge Britain

The middle-aged woman sprawled on the ground in front of me, in her black dress and perilous night-out heels, will definitely have a headache in the morning. She'll deny it was the booze of course, however much she has had, just as her son will deny it was the booze that caused him to tumble backwards into her as he was ejected from the pub for being drunk and unruly, so that her head hit the pavement with a dead clunk. He'll continue to insist the doormen assaulted him, even though the police have already checked the CCTV footage and satisfied themselves they did nothing of the sort.

It is the Saturday night of the August Bank Holiday weekend, and in the pedestrianised heart of Basingstoke, a tidy shopping street punctuated by vast neon-clad drinking halls, the Hampshire constabulary are busy policing the night-time economy.

Mesopotamian sculpture sells for record 57 million dollars

NEW YORK (AFP) -A tiny and extremely rare 5,000-year-old white limestone sculpture from ancient Mesopotamia sold for 57.2 million dollars in New York on Wednesday, smashing records for both sculpture and antiquities. The carved Guennol Lioness, measuring just over eight centimeters (3 1/4 inches) tall, was described by Sotheby's auction house as one of the last known masterworks from the dawn of civilization remaining in private hands.

"It was an honor for us to handle The Guennol Lioness, one of the greatest works of art of all time," Richard Keresey and Florent Heintz, the experts in charge of the sale, said in a joint statement.

"Before the sale, a great connoisseur of art commented to us that he always regarded the figure as the 'finest sculpture on earth' and it would appear that the market agreed with him," they said.

Walnut Creek police arrest Benicia man in homicide earlier this week

WALNUT CREEK -Police have arrested a Benicia man on suspicion of murder in the shooting death of a man whose body was found earlier this week behind a Walnut Creek restaurant, police said.

Jonathan Carroll Marvin, 34, is suspected of killing Pittsburg resident Eric James Martin, 30, whose body was discovered in his car early Monday. Martin had been shot multiple times.

Marvin was booked into County Jail early this morning and is being held without bail, jail staff said.

Lt. Steve Skinner said Marvin was arrested on a warrant late Thursday night. Skinner said he expects to release more details about the case against Marvin this evening.

Friends described Martin as a successful drywall installer who bought and sold cars. He was the father of an infant boy.

A worker on Corkaerts Road, a dead-end, commercial back street in downtown Walnut Creek, called 911 about 5 a.m.
