Zoo story: Sex-power-status

They pull out orange peels and corn cobs and a blue racquetball and a Twix wrapper and a party horn, like someone would blow on New Year's. Oh, and coins.

"We're doing pretty good," says Andrea Schuch, another primate keeper. "I think we have 76 cents."

They are sweating. They are trying not to touch their faces with their encrusted hands, and not to inhale any whiffs of the ooze that surrounds them. Lemurs are dirty. The males battle in stink wars, rubbing their tails onto scent glands on their arms, then waving the foul-smelling tails at each other.

Cleaning the lemur moat is a thankless task. So why are the keepers laughing and wearing Mardi Gras beads? Why is Kevin reciting an entire scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Why is another staffer, a woman covered in slime, singing a snippet from West Side Story?

"I feel pretty, oh so pretty! I feel pretty and witty and bright!"

They have to make it fun.

Aristocrats take weird to same-old royal heights

It wasn't her fault that the former surveyor of her pictures was unmasked as both a homosexual and a spy, but it was a pleasant whiff of promise to those of us who marvel at her personal blamelessness.

Linley, the Queen's nephew, is married with two children. That never stopped anyone being versatile, nor would a proper aristocratic wife worry about it. Rather, she'd count herself lucky that his peccadillo was so basic.

Things could be so much more complicated, what with rubber mackintoshes, spanking, strict governesses, bondage, and wearing women's knickers under your Saville Row suit trousers, to name a few English upper class diversions. Does the knicker thing still work, incidentally, now that thongs are popular? Do you get them custom made, with your family crest? Alas, you have to marry well to find out.

Ahmadinejad v. Bollinger: Words Were Spoken, But What Was Said?

The holocaust is fast fading in light of the aggressions against the Palestinians. When the whole world finally figures out what has been going on what will be made of the holocaust then?

The man also makes a good point about the events of 9/11, particularly as this is perceived as an event for animosity towards Iran. Ahmadinejad also is correct in pointing out the breach of protocol and manners to his hosts. What buffoons!

Great article, Ru thank-you for most eloquently describing what happened.

Are toy recalls affecting the holidays?

A list of recalls is available online at Internet web site wwww.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html. The list includes Curious George plush toys that may have been exposed to lead; Dollar General toy cars with lead paint dangers; numerous Fisher Price toys with both lead paint and choking hazards; JC Penny Winnie the Pooh play sets; Mattel's Barbie and Polly Pocket toys and wooden toys from many suppliers. Several magnetic toys were recalled due to choking hazards. Wal-Mart pulled Easy Bake Ovens due to a child's finger being nearly amputated. Kmart pulled Pool Pump water guns , wooden toys vehicles and some baby rattles from its shelves. But the toys on the recall list shouldn't be missed this holiday, said Kim Freely, Kmart corporate spokesperson. "The toy recalls are a small percentage of toys on the market," she said.
