November 24, 1957 - World-famous Mexican painter influenced by Czanne, an active communist, and a husband of Frida Kahlo, died in 1957. Rivera's large wall works in fresco established the Mexican Mural Renaissance together with works by Orozco, Siqueiros, and others. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera painted murals in Mexico City, Chapingo, Cuernavaca, San Francisco, Detroit, New York City. His 1931 retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City was their second. Rivera paintings are exhibited by many of the greatest museums. When his patron discovered in 1933 that Rivera had painted a portrait of Lenin in the mural Man at the Crossroads at Rockefeller Center, Nelson Rockefeller angrily insisted the figure be painted out. Rivera refused and Rockefeller fired him and destroyed the unfinished work.

Sievert: Mixed martial arts are here to stay

Mixed martial arts aren't going anywhere.

The much-maligned sport has taken on all comers in its 14-year history in the United States and has been left standing every time. Legislators, regulators, even television networks have tried to keep mixed martial arts relegated to underground status. They all took their best shots and missed.

While in its infancy in America in the mid-1990s, mixed martial arts was a grab bag of combat, pitting lean jiu-jitsu practitioners against 300-pound barroom brawlers, with virtually no means of attack prohibited. But several rules changes aimed at increasing safety and the adoption of weight classes have cleaned up the sport.

This modernization of mixed martial arts has increased acceptance and led to an explosion in interest.

Anita, Stuart Subotnick, ex-owners of The Reef, buy oceanfront home in ...

A month after Anita and Stuart Subotnick sold The Reef in Palm Beach in a very quiet $31.85 million deal, they bought a home at 1260 S. Ocean Blvd. in Manalapan.

At $6.58 million, their purchase from the estate of builder George Rothman is a bargain. According to records at the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser's Office, the 2007 market value for the land alone was $5.7 million. The two-story, five-bedroom oceanfront house, built in 1974, covers 8,168 square feet.

Stuart Subotnick, executive vice president and partner in Palm Beacher John Kluge's Metromedia empire, will be living next door to John Y. Christopher, better known outside the neighborhood as contemporary keyboardist and composer Yanni.

For 11 years, the Subotnicks owned The Reef, a landmarked Art Deco and Moderne mansion at 702 N.

Stilwell Junior High School

The T-Team students have been working on their chemistry projects. Students were given several options to explore. Some researched modern chemists and chemistry careers. Other students made their own soap or researched the history of soap-making. Studying the chemistry of carbon compounds was an option, and a number of students stretched themselves with the "advanced formulas and equations" option. The T-Team science teacher is Ruth Henderson.

Stilwell Junior High students Tori Gedler and Emma Griffiths were recently selected for participation in the 22nd annual Opus Honor Choir festival.
