No Child to the rescue?

It's not a magic bullet that can fix all that is wrong with public education in this country; no single law can do that. But it also is not the source of inexcusable educational practices — most notably, decisions to narrow the curriculum or teach to the test — for which it is so frequently blamed.

What the law is, in fact, is the boldest step our nation has taken on issues of education and race since 1954's Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka. NCLB powerfully uncouples academic expectations from skin color, socioeconomic status and geography. It allows each state to develop its own standards and tests but says plainly that the state will base school evaluations on whether all groups of children are being taught grade-level skills in reading and mathematics, and by qualified teachers — no matter where in the state you live, your race or ethnicity, how much money your parents earn or the language spoken in your home.

Michael Pointer: Purdue Q&A

Question: When will the Purdue quarterback actually look off his primary receiver and go through his progressions? From what I saw Saturday, come-heck-or-high-water, Curtis Painter is going to throw to his primary, even if there is a crowd. And, on two of those interceptions, no Boiler receiver was in the area. I haven't seen anyone say that a receiver zigged when he should have zagged. Were those interceptions all on Painter? Quotes from coaches and Painter seem to suggest so. (Mike from Kokomo)

Answer: Mike, I have covered four quarterbacks since I've been on the Purdue beat: Brandon Hance, Kyle Orton, Brandon Kirsch and Painter. (I missed having the pleasure of covering Drew Brees.) I heard that complaint about everyone of them, including Orton, who had 31 touchdown passes and just five interceptions as a starter.

Governor fights uphill battle wooing Iowa voters in pivotal caucuses

Richardson and Edwards, staying in the same Holiday Inn in Mason City in the first week of November, run into each other in the hotel's workout room and jointly grouse about how many Obama TV ads they had seen that morning.

Richardson is on a five-day swing through eastern and central Iowa, where he holds town-hall style events, meets with various editorial boards and plugs a $15 billion plan for veterans.

"It's crunch time," the candidate acknowledges.

Like his rivals, Richardson is preparing for the final stretch that will be only barely interrupted by the upcoming holidays. In early November, the governor's campaign shifted 10 staffers from Nevada to Iowa. He has set up 18 field offices and has more than 100 paid field organizers on the ground.

Life's quickest decisions tend to linger the longest

Out of the corner of my left eye, I caught a flash of movement. When I looked I saw a cat running flat-out across the avenue. Pure luck got him across five lanes but he had one more to go. Mine.

Having once been a pilot and having driven ships as a career, I'd developed a good appreciation of relative motion between moving bodies. Almost instantly, my brain said, "Bad news."

I'll spare the details by simply saying that the contact was solid. This was confirmed when I looked in my rear view mirror. I've been a hunter most of my life and there are times when you know something won't be getting up again. This was one of those times.

In less time than it takes to read, here's the decision process that went through my head:

"It's late Friday rush hour on a six-lane avenue.
