Dallas school district officials reassure parents, students on magnet ...
A group of parents and students is raising concerns that Dallas school officials are making "backroom decisions" to scale back the district's magnet schools at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, making them less effective. The Dallas Independent School District said the misgivings are unfounded. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa recently said that the district prizes the magnet schools and would not "tinker" with them. Students and parents at the Science and Engineering and Talented and Gifted magnet high schools – recognized as two of the best public schools in the country – cite several reasons for their concerns. They want to know whether Spanish results on standardized tests will be accepted for admittance into the high school magnets next school year, as has been posted on DISD's Web site.

Officials cut ribbon for new Bronxdale Community Center
Housing Authority and elected officials, Bronxdale Houses residents and NYCHA staff cut the ribbon last week to celebrate the grand opening of the new state-of-the-art Bronxdale Community Center. The two-story, 23,000-square-foot facility cost about $10 million to complete and was built over a formerly underutilized parking lot in the Bronxdale Houses. "This is a great day for this community," said NYCHA Chairman Tino Hernandez. "The Bronxdale Community Center is modern and high-tech and will offer great educational, recreational and cultural opportunities for the entire community." The first floor of the new facility includes a full, regulation-size gymnasium with a stage, seating for spectators, and locker rooms, as well as spaces for administrative and educational activities.
