No snow, no go: Ski area postpones opening day

Doug Allen, vice president of mountain operations for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp., confirmed Thursday that the ski area plans to replace the 21-year-old haul rope on its gondola. But Andy Wirth, executive vice president of sales and marketing and chief marketing officer for Intrawest, said emphatically that the planned replacement of the 60-ton wire rope, which pulls gondola cabins to Thunderhead Peak, was not a factor in Thursday's decision to delay opening of the ski area.

“It's inaccurate to say the replacement of the haul rope was a factor in our revised opening schedule," Wirth said.

Allen said rough and irregular stretches on the rope system have created “operational hassles," but no safety concerns. If Steamboat had sufficient snow to open as scheduled Nov.

Conn.: Real-Estate Suit Settled

HARTFORD, Conn. - A law firm, mortgage company and real estate broker have agreed to pay $700,000 in fines, forfeitures and restitution to settle allegations that they engaged in kickback schemes that cheated hundreds of home buyers for mortgage-related services, state officials said Monday.

The allegations expose an "uneven playing field" between the real estate industry, which is involved in numerous property transactions, and less-experienced home buyers, state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said.

He sued the Farmington law firm of Reiner, Reiner & Bendett in October, accusing it of concealing $142,200 in kickbacks and inducements between 2002 and 2005. The law firm, which also sells title insurance, used sham service, rental and other agreements to conceal the payments, Blumenthal said.

The Latest Headlines...

These are themes hardly worthy of controversy and the kind of negative publicity surrounding him and his band.

Thompson does NOT perform anthems that glorify war-criminals, concentration camps or genocide The worst of all false accusations flung at Thompson is that he is the author of a song called: "Jasenovac & Gradiska Stara." Contrary to fallacious propaganda and claims, Thompson is not the author of this song. He does not, nor has he ever, performed it live. It cannot be found on any of Thompson's seven albums. We challenge all his critics and accusers to listen to all of his recorded work and learn the truth for themselves. Once again, we challenge all to obtain copies of his official albums; and kindly ask to refrain from viewing or listening to propagandistic montages constructed and posted on the Internet by anonymous Thompson-haters.

Mall's window wonderland.

A window-design contest for art students will help give the Gallery at Market East its seasonal look this month.

The contest, known as "Windows to a Winter Wonderland," features four seasonally themed window designs produced by students at the Art Institute of Philadelphia.

Shoppers can vote on which design they think is best at the Gallery's visitor center or its Web site, www.galleryatmarketeast.com. A winner will be announced in late January.

"We wanted to do something that would tie into the city's desire to make Center City a festive environment," Maureen Brady, marketing director for the Gallery, said yesterday. "Pedestrians can pass by, see this, and vote for their favorites."

The four designs, which feature plenty of tinsel, mannequins and holiday ornaments, hang in the storefront windows of the former Strawbridge's on Market Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets.

Friday wild card

S-R reporter Amy Cannata came to my desk this morning to vent about these kids today and their flip-flops. Once upon a time, flip-flogs (did anyone else call them "thongs?") were reserved solely for the beach, but are now everyday footwear.

The problem - teenagers don't walk anymore, she said, they "shuffle."

I can't help but wonder if my posture and gait was permanently altered by the days of untied sneakers.

Question: Is it the shoes? It's gotta be the shoes...

15,000 lt of synthetic milk seized

The Punjab Health Department authorities seized more than 15,000 litres of synthetic milk from a tanker at Rajpura-based Gur Kirpa Vaishnu dhaba this afternoon.

Meanwhile,Punjab health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla has directed Health officials to raid across the state to detect and curb sale and supply of synthetic milk and food items. The Health Department authorities have also been asked to take preventive measures round the year. We have made it our daily activity to check adulteration of food items, asserted Chawla to The Tribune.

Apart from the tanker, 100 drums were recovered from the dhaba (roadside eatery) by the Health Department team that were alleged to be used for adulteration.

Civil surgeon Dr Usha Dhingra, and her team collected samples of the seized milk and other items ,including white powder resembling condensed milk.

With right setup and equipment, home gyms make working out easier

Weary of the gym scene and its inherent issues, from the lack of privacy to the hassle of the commute, Cheryl Van Duyne took a hard look at her closet and decided this was where she could work up a good sweat. Accordingly, the interior designer began remodeling her North Dallas home to turn a spare bedroom into a new closet; she then turned the original closet into a compact, fully functional workout room for herself and her husband, Roger.

"It's not a huge space, but we have a treadmill for me, a stationary bike for my husband and a TV in there," Mrs. Van Duyne says of the room, which also features a ceiling fan, marble floors and a mirrored wall. "We always watch the evening news anyway, so it's not a problem to work out when we do. I'll never go back to a gym."

In her professional life, Mrs.
