Local martial arts master on Discovery Channel

With televised cage matches and scores of professional fight leagues, mixed martial arts stands as one of the most popular and exciting sports to follow these days.

Audio Slideshow: Charles Gaylord

But what we see now probably wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for guys like Great Grandmaster Charles Gaylord, who brought mixed martial arts from Hawaii — where the art form was created — to the mainland and introduced it to the rest of the world.

Back in his day, though, when it was just about street fighting, there were no cameras, no corporate sponsorships, no cages. Just survival skills.

"In the street, there are no rules," he said. "But a poke in the eye, a chop in the throat, putting a guy out at one vital area, you can't do that (in the professional mixed martial arts world) because there are rules."

More than 40 years after Gaylord first arrived in the Bay Area and began in San Leandro teaching kajukenbo, the world's first mixed martial art, he and the art he helped cultivate are finally getting their due.

Hard choices ahead for Bears

Look out below.

Suddenly and shockingly, the defending NFC champion Bears find themselves several key decisions away from free- falling into back-to-back losing seasons in 2007 and 2008.

That much potentially rides on the choices the Bears will make over the final three games and in the first month of the off-season. The standings mean nothing, but it's a pivotal period for the organization that could dictate how long the stench of this losing season lingers.

Sports News for Kids: Naples rugby player competes against Australians

Shane Young, a senior at Gulf Coast High School, played for the U.S. 19-and-under team Sunday as America took on a team from New South Wales, Australia. The game was in Orlando.

Young also played last year for the 18-and-under national team when it traveled to England to play the English national team. He has been captain of the Naples Bears Rugby team in all three years of its existence, and was voted the Most Valuable Player last season. Young plays the position of scrum half.

High school rugby started in Florida in 2005, and the Naples Bears were the only Southwest Florida team for the first three years. Bears coach Steve Young recently announced Lely and Cape Coral high schools are adding teams this year. There are now 18 teams throughout the state divided into North and South divisions.

Attorney general warns consumers to watch for con artists in wake of ...

Missouri Attorney Gen. Jay Nixon warned residents to beware of law breakers and con artists in seeking help for burst pipes, downed trees and wrecked cars from the weekend ice storm.

Unfortunately after a storm like this, we can count on the con artists coming out of the woodwork even before the ice thaws, Nixon said in a news release today. Consumers need to avoid doing business with strangers and watch for price gouging, which is against the law.

Consumers may need supplies like gasoline, generators, firewood, bottled water and other necessities because of power outages, he said. Once the ice melts and power is restored, home repair contractors an tree limb and debris removal companies will be busy, he added.

Nixon offered advice for consumers to avoid getting ripped off:

Be suspicious of solicitors who go door-to-door offering to make home repairs.

Hey, keep eyes on the wheels!

Aimed at cute-obsessed young women, the Pino also can be equipped with accessories that include pink bear-shaped cushions, seat covers with hearts, a CD case that looks like fat red lips, and a colorful cover for a tissue box. Exterior colors include pink (of course) and "milk tea beige."

In most countries, experts tend to advise against making autos pink or adding other "cute" features to appeal to female drivers partly because that may smack of sexism and turn off women — except in Japan where the culture of cute is so prevalent grown men aren't embarrassed about dangling little mascots from their cell phones.

Nissan marketing manager Miwa Ishii says one goal for Pino is to court young drivers to the Nissan brand with hopes they'll move on to buy more expensive models in the future.
