Seeing Egypt from a new point of view

These hour-long flights are packed with tidbits of history and sky-high glimpses of the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens and the majestic Temple of Hatshepsut which appears, from this vantage point at least, to have been carved right out of the cliff. The only thing missing is the pyramids, but sadly they're hundreds of kilometres north on the outskirts of Cairo.

Luxor has been called the biggest open-air museum on the planet and as we look down on the elaborate tributes to the gods on the east banks of the Nile (the temples of Luxor and Karnak) and the monuments to death on the west banks (the tombs and temples of Egypt's Pharaohs), it's clear this is the handiwork of higher beings.

"Every day is better than the day before," says Ahmed. "When I see the sunrise, when I see the view ...

Tech-Travel Gifts for Road Warriors, Students and Other Gadget Lovers

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- For road warriors, students and anyone else who needs to protect their laptop computer, the bag or backpack they use must be sturdy. But there's nothing that says they can't also look good at the same time.

A new line of products from Skooba Design embraces form and function, not to mention color and bold graphics. Among them:

The Skooba Shuttle, a lightweight, yet highly protective and stylish laptop backpack. It features Skooba's Air Square protection system of air- filled cells in the laptop compartment, padded/ventilated back panel, shock- absorbing top handles, and wide-base design, allowing it to remain upright unassisted.

The Skooba Skreener, a messenger-style bag with a very noticeable twist -- the front flap is printed with an actual, airport-type X-ray graphic of items typically found in laptop/ travel bags.

Thunder notes: Rookies making big impact

Kyle McCullough just wanted a chance," Booth said. “He works his tail off. He goes to the net and does the little things, and it's paying off for him."Lacasse, a sixth-round draft pick (181st overall) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2004 NHL entry draft, has a 2-3 record with a 3.93 goals against average and a .888 save percentage. Lacasse is on loan to the Thunder from Hamilton of the American Hockey League.“Every game, every practice, he's battling," Booth said of Lacasse. “He knows he wants to get to the next level of the game, and that's been pushing him. He's a prospect, and that's something we want to associate ourselves with as an organization."Orr, who played for the Thunder last season, and Clarke have each scored two points.“Jamison Orr is a kid that's a big, physical player," Booth said.

Jenice Armstrong | The art of the steal

"Let's face it. Everyone cheats. You may think you don't, you may try to convince yourself that you're above reproach, but you're not.

"It's part of the human condition to be a little bit sneaky, a wee bit opportunistic and just a tad shady. We all strive to be our best selves, but deep down in the darkest recesses of our souls, there's always a part of us that says, 'Try to get it done the easy way, and don't worry about stepping on that other guy!' "

The above didn't come from me. But I didn't steal it, either.

Lest I be accused of the subject of Chapter 17, "Getting Away with Plagiarizing," I want to disclose that I pulled the entire passage off a Web site promoting "The Art of Cheating: A Nasty Little Book for Tricky Little Schemers and Their Hapless Victims" (Simon & Schuster, $14.95).

On the NFL | At 5-8, Birds no longer can kid themselves

Finally, someone has a firm grasp on reality. After losing to the New York Giants yesterday, the Eagles might not be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs just yet, but let's be honest. They aren't going to play a game in January, and even if they did, what would be the point?

The Eagles have too many holes and too few playmakers to be any threat in the postseason. They're too young at crucial positions, too old at others, too beat up at still others. And their leadership hasn't exactly been above reproach.

When you consider what has happened since August, from waiving Jeremiah Trotter to not extending L.J. Smith's contract to benching Jevon Kearse and Darren Howard to pulling Lito Sheppard from the Seattle game, it's a wonder the team hasn't splintered already.

Just Warming Up: So much easier to complain

Look at the comments on our Web site. Some of the comments are thoughtful and really add to the understanding of the story at hand. I love those comments, and appreciate people who take the time to deepen our understanding of a story.Others, of course, just love to flame on people. Not just the newspaper although there is plenty of that but also people in the stories. There is so much negativity and name calling that it can be depressing. Some Web sites, including The New York Times, edit people's comments and apparently deny many postings. There is a fear that negativity just for the sake of negativity will chase away people who are posting serious comments. While I understand that thinking, I still want as many people as possible to participate on our Web site and in our newspaper. I can weed through a lot of the ridiculous comments and find those choice nuggets from readers that are great to read.
