EDUCATION: Lew-Port students act combative
In the world of stage combat, nothing is taken for granted. In instructing theater students Thursday at Lewiston-Porter High School, Niagara University artist-in-residence Steve Vaughan emphasized the importance of details in staging a fall. The legs need to be spread apart with the right foot facing the front, he said. Left knee pointing outward, the person catching their partner needs to maintain their center while forming a triangle with their legs. The person who's falling, meanwhile, has to resist the most basic instinct."Be stiff," he said, telling students not to help their partner catch them or raise them back up. "Are boards afraid of falling? Be a board."This type of instruction is welcome at Lew-Port, which has opened its doors to NU this year in an effort to enhance its arts instruction.

Richard Roberts told Oral Roberts University students Wednesday that God spoke to him last Thursday and told him to resign. Students cheered and cried as Roberts spoke for about three minutes at the school's chapel service Wednesday, five days after his resigned as the school's president. Roberts told the students that God spoke to him Thursday and told him to step down. Roberts said he initially resisted the instructions, but God told him that if he would resign, the school would be blessed ''supernaturally.'' Roberts resigned Friday. On Tuesday, Yukon businessman Mart Green promised the school up to $70 million, more than enough to erase the school's debt.
Does the holiday spirit have you eager to give?
The Salvation Army needs volunteers for Toy Town, which provides free Christmas gifts to about 1,500 children each year, says Maj. Betty Bender, director of practical ministries at the Salvation Army. "Over the holiday season, we typically use 2,000 volunteers. Occasionally, we run short," she says. They're still looking for volunteers to help interview parents as well as run Toy Town in December - which allows parents to choose donated toys and wrap them for their children. Parents fill out an application and are interviewed by volunteers during their visit to the Salvation Army at 800 N. Cliff Ave., Bender says. "The application period starts the Tuesday after Thanksgiving," she says. Interviews continue for two weeks. The charity also needs help with donations.
