Anita, Stuart Subotnick, ex-owners of The Reef, buy oceanfront home in ...
A month after Anita and Stuart Subotnick sold The Reef in Palm Beach in a very quiet $31.85 million deal, they bought a home at 1260 S. Ocean Blvd. in Manalapan. At $6.58 million, their purchase from the estate of builder George Rothman is a bargain. According to records at the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser's Office, the 2007 market value for the land alone was $5.7 million. The two-story, five-bedroom oceanfront house, built in 1974, covers 8,168 square feet. Stuart Subotnick, executive vice president and partner in Palm Beacher John Kluge's Metromedia empire, will be living next door to John Y. Christopher, better known outside the neighborhood as contemporary keyboardist and composer Yanni. For 11 years, the Subotnicks owned The Reef, a landmarked Art Deco and Moderne mansion at 702 N.
'Golden Compass' briefly loses its way
(B) The familiar fantasy character of the feisty tomboy heroine gets an upgrade in The Golden Compass. This smart, streamlined adaptation of the first novel in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy unfolds in a world similar to but vastly different from our own in a time that's like a blend of our 19th and 20th centuries. The movie goes by quickly -- maybe too quickly. You want the film to slow down so you can savor the alternate-universe England that writer-director Chris Weitz and production designer Dennis Gassner conjure from a millennium's worth of public monuments, as well as a mix-and-match of Victorian and Edwardian architecture and industry. We move from the brushed stones of Oxford to an art deco London without losing our bearings, so cunningly have the filmmakers filled out their vision with burnished wood and coruscating metal and glass.

Spokane's Fox Theater reopens after $31 million makeover
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- The elegant Fox Theater, which was scheduled to be torn down for a parking garage seven years ago, will reopen this weekend after a $31 million makeover that restored its art deco glory. Opera star Frederica von Stade will open the theater Saturday night, and crooner Tony Bennett performs Monday. The decrepit theater, which had devolved into a budget movie house in a rundown part of downtown, was restored with a combination of private donations and $8 million in state funds and will be the new home of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. It's part of a growing area called the Davenport Arts District that includes the restored Davenport Hotel, the 800-seat Bing Crosby Theater, The Big Easy concert hall, and numerous nightclubs and art galleries.
An early look at Cunard's Queen Victoria
ABOARD THE QUEEN VICTORIA -- Okay, so you've seen my rant on the new Queen Victoria's cabin decor. What's my take on the rest of the ship? In short: It's charming. Smaller than Cunard's much-ballyhooed, four-year-old Queen Mary 2, the 90,000-ton Victoria has an intimacy and feel much more reminiscent of the soon-to-retire Queen Elizabeth 2, something that surely will please long-time Cunarders who found the 150,000-ton QM2 a tad too big and impersonal. The 2,014-passenger Victoria, to be christened later today by the Duchess of Cornwall, also is elegant. Cunard president Carol Marlow tells us the line looked to the great Cunard liners of the past to set the tone, with classical motifs mixed with art deco and nouveau touches that evoke the golden age of ship travel.
