Gifts that give back: Presents benefit charities

A sure way to feel great about the presents you give this season is to buy gifts that give something back to worthy charities. And don't for a second think you'll be shortchanging anybody on your list. Businesses and manufacturers of all sorts of products are becoming increasingly aware that shoppers want good gifts that do good in the process.

Here's a look at some of our faves:

Fore! The Executive Putter Set, $44.99, includes a collapsible putter, two balls and a wood practice cup and is available at giftback.com, a Long Island-based online gift service that donates 10 percent of all purchases to customer-designated charities. $44.99.

The Arts & Crafts Boutique is a free event and runs from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday at Lee's Inlet Kitchen, 4460 U.S. 17 Business in Murrells Inlet.

Home tour tickets are $25. Advance tickets are available at Lee's Inlet Apothecary, Lee's Inlet Kitchen, The Chocolate & Coffee House in Litchfield Exchange or at Rose Arbor Fabrics in Myrtle Beach and at Lee's Inlet Kitchen on Saturday.

What, no flour? It’s a piece of cake

Meanwhile, it is the easiest procedure in the world to grind your own in an electric coffee mill. The only caveat is to do it in small batches.

Other finely ground ingredients are also candidates, though not a substitute, for flour in the same way as nuts, which release their oil as they bake. The River Café’s deliciously dense but loose-textured lemon cake has spawned a thousand polenta cakes around the land, of which the recipe below is yet another.

Polenta brings texture and a sweet, mealy flavour to the party, but is not the easiest of ingredients to bake with. Even when advertised as "fine" its consistency can vary from something that resembles the sands off the Isle of Wight to Chanel face powder. On the whole, it needs to be cut with ground nuts if you want a sponge with any grace.

ALL HAIL YO LA TENGO

Yo La Tengo are Hoboken, New Jersey's greatest musical export since Frank Sinatra. Centring around the husband and wife team of Ira Kaplan (vocals, guitars, keyboards) and Georgia Hubley (vocals, drums, keyboards), Yo La Tengo had a fluid line-up (including singer/songwriter, Dave Schramm of country-rockers The Schramms) until the band hooked up with bassist/vocalist/keyboard-player James McNew in 1991. Yo La Tengo are unpredictable mavericks. Their next release might be a fragile folky thrum, or a heavy-metal Beach Boys cover, or a droning interpretation of a Sun Ra composition. "We have very wide tastes," understates Ira. "We love avant garde things, we love simple pop music," continues Georgia. "to us music has no boundaries. We push ourselves in these different directions to keep things interesting, for us and for the audience." "I don't accept that those are mutually exclusive concepts," argues Ira.

Yeah money is great to have but you can still live a happy life together. Tips for your sister, shop around even on the internet to find deals. Also visit other towns nearby to see if you find deals too. You are a great news anchor. We missed you from Daybreak but weekends are good to.Congrats on your wedding! I absolutely agree with you too! I was at a wedding a couple of years ago... and the bottom layer of the couple's cake was actually styrofoam covered in frosting!! It looked completely real -- but it wasn't! I can't remember how much the bride told me it cost - but I was surprised to find out the cake wasn't real. The couple had sheet cake instead. Thanks for blogging -- good luck on your planning!!

Wow 300K to 500K for a wedding? That's insane in my book. My sister's wedding dress cost $800 and I thought that was extravagant.
