Sivaji - The Boss gets book-ed, goes to school
Chennai: It's been over 150 days since the Rajnikanth starrer Sivaji hit theatres, but the superstar mania is still on. And cashing in on this are the makers of Sivaji – AVM and Navneet publications who have introduced custom-made Sivaji merchandise that includes notebooks with superstar's pictures. “People are ready to grab any memorabilia of Sivaji post its release. So we thought what better way to please them but by giving them something of use like these notebooks," says CEO, AVM Productions, S C Balu. The smaller notebooks come in packs of five and the bigger ones in sets of three – and the bonus is a free CD of Sivaji's songs, a poster of the film and four mobile downloads. “Notebooks are something that students often find boring to use. So why not make a boring and dull thing interesting," says VP, Stationery Division, Navneet Publications (India Limited), Shailendra Gala.
Naya Gaon NP cleared despite Centre's objections
The Punjab Government today finally cleared the formation of a nagar panchayat comprising the areas of Naya Gaon, Kansal, and Nadah. The Local Bodies Minister, Punjab, Choudhary Jagjit Singh, today told The Tribune that the government would issue a formal notification in this regard before the end of this week. However, neither the minister nor any senior official of the Department of Local Government, Punjab, threw light on how the government had found a way around the recent decision of the Central Government, striking down the states plea to get over 65,000 hectares of land out of the purview of the various central and state Forest Acts. A statement issued by the office of the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Punjab, and MLA, Morinda, under which the entire area of the proposed NP falls, Mr Jagmohan Singh Kang, said the NP status for the area had been cleared with the Chief Minister, Punjab, Capt Amarinder Singh, today giving the final nod to a proposal in this regard.
Kofi Annan: Not that Great
Back then Annan was an immediate role model for millions of children worldwide, in Africa and particularly in Ghana. Not a bad achievement at all for a continent which has been known for all the dark stories of the world. But in the end Annan betrayed us all. Was he an awesome role model? Good but not that great. It was always going to be difficult for any Secretary General to deal with the Bush administration's defiance of the United Nations. But Annan's own indulgence or rather over indulgence with the American regime right from the start set him up in a tight position. Even before Annan was pro-American he was American. Nobody likes to admit it but I'll say it: Annan was a puppet of the United States. To date his opposition to the Iraqi war-though apparently his nemesis-stands as the most decisive decision he took as a leader.
And the bland played oompah
FRYEBURG -After marching and performing during Saturday morning's 90-minute Grand Parade at the Fryeburg Fair, the Bridgton Bavarian Band still had plenty of "oomph" left for another two hours of German Oompah music. And they needed it, because the troubadours, ages 40 to 76, skillfully wended this way and that through a crowd of thousands to perform many more sets of waltzes, polkas and marches at several different impromptu venues. Their lively music stopped many people in their tracks, drawing applause, and, yes, even groupies. "We get a lot of compliments, but unfortunately, we almost never practice and it showed today," band leader Dick Albert said. "Most of us are in the 60 to 70 (age) zone." They also had two musicians subbing for regulars during their 16th Fryeburg Fair performance - Dick Poland of Hiram playing his 1910 tuba and, on the clarinet, Heather Stewart of North Bridgton.
Local, state briefs: Embattled lawyer's state bar resignation is OK'd
The state Supreme Court has approved the resignation of a Tulsa lawyer from the Oklahoma Bar Association. A court order filed this week listed three professional complaints against William J. Anton, who faced pending disciplinary proceedings. One of Anton's clients asserted that he was entitled to about $67,000 in a settlement of his workers compensation case and that Anton made partial payments to him of only $7,400, records show. He has sued Anton, alleging breach of contract. In a response in that unresolved suit, Anton denied wrongdoing. In complaints by two other people, Anton was accused of co-mingling his funds with those of a client or clients; with failing to communicate the status of a client's funds to that client; and with making payments to Anton's family members from funds to be held in trust for clients.
