| The 53 places to go in 2008
Vietnam and Cambodia are so 2007. Now, Laos is shaping up to be Indochina's next hot spot. Ancient sites like the Wat Phou temple complex and the capital city of Vientiane are drawing culture seekers. Luxury teak houseboats are cruising down the Mekong. And global nomads are heading to Luang Prabang to sample the Laotian tasting menu at 3 Nagas (www.3nagas.com) or hang out by the infinity pool at the seriously upscale Résidence Phou Vao (www.residencephouvao.com). 2 LISBON Bargain-seeking tourists have long flocked to Lisbon, typically among the most affordable of European cities. But now the Portuguese capital is also emerging as a cultural force. The new Berardo Collection Museum (www.berardocollection.com), in the historic Belem district, boasts a major trove of modern and contemporary art.
Jessica Yu's Protagonist
I knew I had to have something, but I was thinking more along the lines of animation. The problem with animation is that it's so specific, and I felt like I would need to tailor it to each story, but I didn't want to do that. I wanted to have something that felt more shared. And then it was actually all the interviews were done, after I already had a rough cut, that's when the puppet idea came up. The idea of it actually came out of the research on how Euripides plays were actually staged, you know the actors would wear these big masks, and there's something about masks, the fact that you can bring to them your own emotional responses. Depending on what the drama is, you see the face changing even when it isn't. Then Sue West, my other producer knew Janie Geiser, who is a fantastic puppet designer.
Constitutional rights
In response to the letter claiming that history doesn't support the individual's right to own guns, I would like congratulate Mr. Ryan for his historic approach to putting words in the mouths of the forefathers of this fine republic in which we live. To single out the Second Amendment as being a “collective" or “militia only" right is ridiculous, as it is found in the Bill Of Rights, surrounded by such amazing forethoughts as the right to free speech and the right to peaceably assemble. I would like to hear Mr. Ryan's thoughts on how the right to free speech and the First Amendment is a “collective" right, as well. The honest truth is that the Bill Of Rights is undoubtedly the work of the forefathers in drawing the line about how to preserve the individual's rights and freedoms. And while I can agree with some that the world has changed much in the last two hundred plus years, I still stand up and say the Pledge Of Allegiance, including the “under God" part, whether I am of a Christian faith or no.
Art for DART: Frankford Road goes gaudy
Charlotte Lindsey gushed about the plans for the Frankford Road DART station as if she were quickly ticking off the accomplishments of her own kin.Bright colors.Abstract designs.Funky elements.Curvy lines."Am I going too fast?" she said. The artist, whose physical health and mood have been grief-stricken by an almost-fatal car accident four years ago, was a ball of energy.Lindsey and her partner, Larry Enge, have taken on the task of designing the art for both the Trinity Mills and the Frankford Road DART stations. The northernmost station will be a departure from its earthy, faintly historic counterpart at Trinity Mills.Frankford Road station will be, in a word, wild."It made us giggle and turn our eyes," said Doug Hrbacek, a Carrollton resident and member of the art committee. "There's some wild colors there."The artists want the station at Frankford Road to symbolize the beginning and the end of the DART line.
